How We Choose Gear

By Anisur Rahman, editor

Most of yoga needs nothing but floor space. When a prop makes a pose safer or easier, such as a block under your hands or a strap around your foot, our guides suggest one. This page explains how we choose them.

Criteria first

For each type of gear we first write down what matters for the reader, then look for products that meet it:

  • Mats: grip when hands are sweaty, thickness for knees, length for tall people, weight if you carry it, and how easy it is to clean.
  • Blocks: firmness, size and weight, and whether foam or cork suits the use.
  • Straps: length, a buckle that holds, and a material that doesn’t slip.
  • Bolsters and blankets: size, firmness and a washable cover.

Where the information comes from

  • Makers’ specifications: dimensions, materials, weight and care instructions from the maker’s own page.
  • Warranties and return policies, so you know what happens if it doesn’t suit you.
  • Independent safety information about materials, where it exists.

We don’t claim to have tested products by hand. You won’t read “we tried this mat for a month” here, because we didn’t. Each suggestion comes with a short reason based on the facts above.

How picks appear on the site

  • Guides show a small “Helpful gear” box with up to five products that fit that guide.
  • Links go to Amazon.com. They are plain text links: our pages load no images, prices or scripts from Amazon.
  • We don’t show prices, star ratings or customer reviews, because they change often. Check the current price on Amazon before you buy.
  • When a product is no longer available, we replace or remove it.

Money

If you buy through one of our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. No company pays to be included, and a commission never decides which product we suggest. More on our affiliate disclosure page.
